The Voluntary Health Services
Medical Centre is the "brain child" of Prof.
KS Sanjivi, an eminent Professor of Medicine
who was passionate about public health, and
mentored several hundred doctors including Professor
Srinivas. The principles of this organisation
are disease prevention; comprehensive care with
an emphasis on nursing, nutrition, community
welfare; the provision of primary health care
in villages and suburban locations, and the
involvement of general practitioners and community
leaders in these efforts. With 14 primary (Mini)
health centres, the VHS today is a referral
hospital with 450 beds, schools for nursing
and dentistry, post-graduate training in a number
of medical specialties, all housed in a beautiful
25 acre complex in south Chennai.
The Institute of Neurological
Sciences at VHS has grown into a centre of national
importance with international links. Housed
in 8000 square feet of comprehensive space,
the department functions as per World Health
Organization recommendations, and adopts a multi-disciplinary
approach. The staff include consultants in neurology,
general medicine and neurobehaviour; junior
doctors (trainees who spend a period working
with us, gaining experience); clinical, developmental
and neuropsychologists; medical and psychiatric
social workers; a team of physical, occupational
and psychological therapists; a dietician; and
special educators for mentally handicapped individuals.
We have access to all routine investigations
at VHS including special tests through the sophisticated
VIMTA-VHS laboratories; and a number of neurological
investigations including Video EEG, EMG and
Nerve Conduction studies. Brain imaging, CT,
MRI and SPECT scans are arranged at specially
discounted rates, or even free of charge, for
deserving cases through affiliations with external
centres that we have developed over the years.
Although the emphasis is on multi-disciplinary
outpatient management, we have a 20-bed ward
as per National Board for Medical Examinations
guidelines.

Many important industrial
groups, eminent individuals and others have
made donations, many substantial, to aid our
progress over the years, and are too numerous
to mention here.
While these donations have
lead to the development of a vibrant and thriving
Institute of Neurological Sciences, there is
a felt need for constant growth and improvement,
so that we may serve our community better.
