Given
this background, Neurosciences India Group
felt it appropriate for the workshop in
2004 to focus on Stroke. A galaxy of eminent
stroke professionals from around the world
graced this workshop, taking part in active
debates on a range of issues. Prof. JP Mohr,
Sciarra Professor of Neurology and Head
of the Stanley & Doris Tenanbaum Stroke
Unit at New York Neurological Institute,
Columbia University, delivered the 24th
TS Srinivasan Endowment Lecture. Entitled
"The Problem of Stroke in our Community",
this lecture drew a wide-ranging audience
of over 500 eminent individuals. Prof. JP
Mohr received the TS Srinivasan Gold Medal
and Scroll in appreciation of his contributions
to Stroke.
The
three day workshop that followed covered
the gamut of topics in Stroke including:
Basic Sciences, Epidemiology, Clinical Trials,
Imaging, Clinical Syndromes & Diagnosis,
Medical & Surgical Management, Rehabilitation
& Stroke Services. The workshop commenced
with the presentation of "NSIG Lifetime
Achievement Awards" to Prof. Dalal (Mumbai)
and Prof. Hachinski (London- Ontario) for
their contributions to stroke. Mr. Venu
Srinivasan, Chief Patron, presented the
awards and in a unique first the lectures
that followed were webcast live around the
world by Neurosciences India Group. Other
named lectures during the course of the
workshop were the MC Subramanium Lecture
in the session on Epidemiology and Clinical
Trials by Prof. Peter Sandercock, and the
Krishnamoorthy Srinivas Lecture in the session
on Rehabilitation and Stroke Services by
Prof. Tony Rudd.
The
research development session entitled "Transcultural
Perspectives & Research Priorities" was
sponsored by Neurosciences India Group and
featured original transcultural data from
Australia, Singapore and India, evoking
considerable interest. In all the Stroke
workshop provided a unique platform for
Indian professionals and experts to interact
with their peers worldwide, resulting in
technology transfer, research collaborations
and continuing education.
